Stephen Lawrence Day: playing your part in an inclusive society

On the 22nd of April, Stephen Lawrence was murdered at just 18 in an unprovoked racist attack. No convictions were made upon the initial police investigation. But in 1998, a public inquiry into Stephen's case led to rightful prosecution and major changes in the law. 

Stephen’s case changed cultural attitudes around racism, the law and Police practice. It’s led to a deeper understanding of discrimination and new legislation. Steven’s legacy lives long and strong. It serves as a reminder that it is up to all of us to play our part in an inclusive society. 

It’s up to everyone to make changes, raise our voices, educate ourselves and learn from others. In honour of Steven and everyone else who’s faced unjust discrimination in their lives. 

Steven Lawrence Day takes place every year on the 22nd of April, and this year we’re urging as many people as possible to get involved. You’ll find some tips below on how you can play your part. 

Learn about & share Stephen’s story 

Stephen’s story is both heartbreaking and unjust, yet inspiring and astounding at the same time. We can help others understand this inspirational story too. By educating ourselves on how Steven's story changed the face of discrimination, we can spread the word— change IS possible. Learning more about the struggles faced by ethnic minority groups throughout history and the discrimination that still occurs today helps us recognise the changes that still need to occur. 

Fundraise for the Steven Lawrence Foundation 

Raising money for the foundation helps support them to keep doing the incredible work they do. The people of the foundation work tirelessly to raise awareness and give other young people hope that they can live their dreams. You could sign up for a run, have a bake sale at work or host a raffle and donate the proceeds. 

Get creative 

Stephen Lawrence had a talent for art and design, and he was set to peruse his dreams of becoming an architect. In honour of Stephen, the foundation encourages people to get creative and create their own masterpieces in honour of the day. You could be a novice painter, maybe you play around with graphic design, or you simply fancy getting the pencils out for the day. Let the story inspire your very own creation. Then share it on social media to spread the word even further.
